Canine Control

General Information for Dog Owners

A stray dog with a tag can be easily reunited with its family if lost. Please help us to protect your pet by purchasing a dog tag. Tags are available at the Southgate Municipal Office. It is important for dog owners to know that in the interest of public safety, no person shall allow a dog to run at large in the Township. Any dog found running at large is in contravention of the Township of Southgate Canine Control By-law and may be seized and impounded by the Canine Control Officer. The Canine Control Officer may enter on any public property, or private property with the consent of the owner or tenant, for the purpose of capturing any dog running at large.

All dog owners in the Township of Southgate must purchase a dog tag for each dog they own. Dog tags can be purchased at the municipal office after filling out Dog Licence Application Form. Tags must be affixed to the dog’s collar. By-law 2020-078 instructs that dog tags will NOT be issued without a Rabies Vaccination Certificate number, description of the dog and payment. If you have more than three dogs, a kennel license is required.

Please complete one form, when all information has been provided with payment, a dog tag will be issued at the Township of Southgate administration building or mailed to the owner.

Annual Dog License (maximum of three per household)    $40.00 per dog

Existing kennels for renewal are required to complete the attached documents for review by the Township of Southgate enforcement department and submitted before the 31st of December for the following year. Once all documents are received and reviewed the kennel owner will be contacted by the enforcement department to arrange an inspection.
