If one of your carts needs repair, please contact the Public Works Department for further information. In the winter months it is your responsibility to ensure that your carts are not hit by the snowplow.

Why are my carts not getting picked up?

  • Garbage in the Compost or Recycle Carts repeatedly
  • Overloaded carts - Lids must be closed to prevent spilling
  • Carts not set out properly for collection - When opening the lid of the cart, wheels must be away from the road
  • Cart is not close enough to the roadway for arm to reach
  • Carts are too close together - Place carts 1 metre apart
  • Please ensure that your carts are at the road for 7:00 am
Recycle Cart (Blue) Concerns
  •  All lids and tops that are plastic are to remain on the plastic containers
  •  All lids and tops that are metal are to remain on the jars
  •  Waste material has been put into the recycle cart
  •  Use of plastic garbage bags in carts is not permitted
  •  Electrical or Electronic items such as radios, toasters, mixer, VCRs, computers, etc. are collected at transfer stations only
  •  Break down cardboard boxes to save space for you and for us
  •  Prevent spillage by placing glass, cans, etc. in bottom of cart and rinsing your containers
Garbage Cart (Grey) Concerns
  • Placing of excess garbage in the waste cart that does not allow the lid to be fully closed. Closed lids prevent spilling
  • Do not place oversized items longer than 3 feet in the cart
  • There is recycling/compost in your waste cart
Organics Cart (Green) Concerns
  • Waste and/or recyclable material seen in Green Cart
  • Pieces of lumber, blocks of wood, stones in Green Cart
  • Using plastic compostable bags, or any plastics in the Green compost cart is not permitted. Paper bags or newspapers only

Now that the winter season is upon us, it is important to place your carts correctly to allow for snow removal activities and to ensure the collection truck can access carts. This handy guide explains correct cart placement to make sure you don't miss your collection day!

Cart placement and snow removal guide

The Township of Southgate utilizes a no-touch system for the collection of your recycle, waste and compost materials by providing carts for residents and businesses that are tipped on a weekly basis by our collection trucks. Carts must be at the curbside by 7:00 AM on your scheduled pick up day and should be placed 1 metre apart at the grass line or in your laneway.

The green compost cart is collected every week, and the blue recycle cart and grey garbage carts are collected on alternating weeks. Due to our no-touch system, if your materials are not contained in the individual cart, the truck will not dispose of those items. Only items that are in the cart will be taken.
