February 5, 2025 Council Meeting Highlights
· Rob Stovel, from Stovel and Associates Inc presented to Council on behalf of Cox Construction to present a proposal to establish a portable asphalt plant at the Southgate Township Road 14.
· Acting Public Works Manager John Watson presented a report to Council regarding the proposal from Cox Construction to relocate the asphalt plant from their Primrose Pit to the Holstein Gravel Pit located on Southgate Rd 14. In exchange for the relocating of the asphalt plant to the Southgate Holstein pit, Cox Construction is proposing to complete two to four weeks of rehab work on the west end of the pit. Council directed staff to negotiate a formal agreement with Cox Construction for the proposed relocation of their portable asphalt plant.
· Acting Treasurer Kayla Best presented a report to Council outlining the applications for the 2025 Request for Donations. Council approved funding to the Dundalk Dance Association, the Dundalk District Agricultural Society, the Grey County Truck Show, the Dundalk & District Foodbank and the Holstein & District Christmas Hampers.
· Interim CAO Jim Ellis presented a report to Council reviewing the accomplishments and progress by the Township in 2024 in support of and implementing the visions and concepts of the 2023 to 2027 Southgate Community Strategic Plan.
· Mayor Milne provided an update on the most recent County of Grey Council meeting. Highlights from the January 23, 2025 Council meeting can be viewed here.
· Councillor John mentioned that CBC Morning Book Club from CBC News will be attending the Southgate Public Library Authors in Conversation to interview Wayman Hackley.
· Mayor Milne wanted to thank the Southgate Public Library for their dedication and the positive impact the library has on the community.
· Councillor Singh Soares wanted to wish the Tamil community a happy Thai Pongal. Councillor Singh Soares also wanted to raise awareness of homelessness and the housing needs in the area. Councillor Singh Soares also mentioned that February is Black History Month, and is looking forward to all the events happening in the area for Black History Month in the month of February.
· Deputy Mayor Dobreen mentioned that JunCtian Community Initiatives held a Black History Month event on Saturday, February 1, 2025, noting the events success.
