Township Issues Reminder Regarding Snow Clearing on Private Property

The Township of Southgate wishes to remind residents that when clearing snow on private property, it is ILLEGAL to deposit excess snow onto public roadways and sidewalks. This reminder comes in light of Township staff noticing an increase of snow being dumped on public roadways. 

Depositing surplus snow on roadways makes it more difficult for the Township to provide the quality of service and safety standards that Southgate residents have come to depend upon, and endangers motorists who are travelling on the roadway. 

Depositing snow onto a roadway is in violation of Section 181 of Ontario's Highway Traffic Act, and can carry a fine of up to $1,000, plus court costs. 

Help us keep our roads safe and clean this winter. Please keep all excess snow on your property.
