Township of Southgate Seeing Increase in Canine Parvovirus Cases

For Immediate Release

DUNDALK, Ont. -- The Township of Southgate wishes to inform residents that canine control staff are seeing an increase in suspected and confirmed cases of canine parvovirus (also referred to as CPV, CPV2, or parvo) in dogs it has interacted with across the Township..

Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious viral disease that primarily affects puppies and unvaccinated dogs. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and loss of appetite. The virus has a 3-7 day incubation period from the time of exposure. It can be fatal if not treated promptly, making prevention and vaccination critical for the health of the dog. The Township wishes to emphasize that canine parvovirus poses no risk to human health and safety.

These cases are not geographically contained to a specific region of the Township; rather, the cases indicate that the disease is endemic in the canine community across the Township. Dog owners are advised to practice additional precautions with their dogs during this time, including:

  • Ensuring your dog(s) are up-to-date with all vaccinations, including those specific to canine parvovirus;
  • When possible, avoiding places where dogs from multiple homes congregate, such as dog parks and pet shows (especially if the vaccination status of other dogs cannot be verified);
  • Exercising extra hygiene with items shared amongst multiple dogs, such as feeding and watering dishes, dog baths, and other common places; and,
  • Seeking veterinary care as soon as possible if your dog is exhibiting symptoms consistent with those of canine parvovirus.

The Township has prepared an information guide, which can be found below, for those who may have further questions.
